SUMMARY:Guest Artist - Laura Repnak
DESCRIPTION:LAURA REPNAK \nGuest Artist\, June / July 2025 \nLaura moved to Billings from Pennsylvania two years after graduating from college with degrees in English and philosophy. While the reason for the move soon dissolved\, she stayed and earned a master’s degree in Special Education. She eventually married and raised two lovely daughters. Laura taught Special Education for ten years and English at Billings West High School for twenty-three years\, retiring in 2020. She still misses her classroom and remembers fondly her many wonderful students. \nLaura believes the origin of her mixed media work comes from her classroom at West and an extensive\, rather fantastical forest she made from tissue and other paper that covered the entire back wall. It eventually included frogs\, lizards\, butterflies\, and stuffed animals (some her daughters had won at the fair; others she “borrowed” from one daughter’s vast collection). The whimsical nature of that wall is what she’s aiming for in her art. \nWhile Laura’s first pieces were made only of paper\, she soon added acrylic paint and then other materials. She’s always trying new ways of using paper—layering\, burning\, molding\, carving. Most recently she started marbling paper\, some of which she’s incorporated into pieces.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth LaRowe - Billings Arts Association
DESCRIPTION:Color and light are the focus of Elizabeth LaRowe’s artwork. Because of its spontaneous nature\, her personal artistic efforts have concentrated on using water media techniques for the past 42 years. \nRecently\, Elizabeth has been experimenting with watercolor painting on new surfaces other than paper. She has developed unique finishing techniques to create more vivid visual experiences without a glass barrier. \nOriginally from the Boston \, Massachusetts area\, Elizabeth N. LaRowe retired after 39 years as an art educator. Her professional educator career included teaching kindergarten through collegiate levels in the New York Catskills; Cheyenne\, Wyoming; Dodge City\, Kansas; Rigby and Rexburg\, Idaho; as well as Powell\, Wyoming. \nShe holds a BFA degree from the University of Denver and a MAT from the University of Wyoming. \nTeaching art forces one to analyze artistic and creative processes\, breaking them down into small understandable steps with the added benefit of making the teacher a better artist. \nSince retiring Elizabeth has enjoyed living in Montana\, and Idaho.  She feels it is a privilege to live in the West because of the rich resources for artistic inspiration.  The changing light and atmospheric conditions are just asking to be painted. \nShe believes plein-air painting\, a technique that is executed outdoors\, represents a direct response to the scene or subjects and helps capture the beauty of the area. She has taken workshops under the direction of professional artists; Zoltan Szabo\, Tony Couch\, Steve Quiller\, Charles Reid\, Irving Shapiro\, Judi Betts\, Judy Morris\, Nita Leland and Mark Mehaffey. Elizabeth has processed the information and techniques learned at the workshops into her own artistic style. \nThroughout the United States Elizabeth has held individual and collaborative art shows. Her paintings have won numerous awards including the Jacksonville Watercolor Society\, the Carbon County Art League Juried shows\, a purchase award at the Headwaters Art Center\, the Ed Robinson Memorial Award from the Idaho Watercolor Society Juried Show 2022. And most recently\, Best of Show at the Cody Country Art League. \nHer paintings have been published in North Light The Best of Watercolor Books: Splash 16\, Exploring Texture\, Splash 18\, Value and Splash 20\, Creative Compositions. Her works adorn homes and businesses throughout the United States. She has been active in local and regional art councils\, associations\, and societies. \nAlways the teacher\, she is available for art presentations and workshops. \nSome of Elizabeth’s work: \nWater Joy Watercolor 8x 10Trout Boss Watercolor 8x 10River Runs Through It Watercolor 12 x16East Rosebud Revisited
