SUMMARY:Guest Artist - Jaime E. Stevens
DESCRIPTION:Jaime E. Stevens\nGuest Artist\nDates: August/September 2022\n \nAmazing Textiles\nPlease Join us\nOpening Night\nFriday\, August 5th\n5 – 9 PM\nOn display through August\nWelcome to Sandstone\, Jaime!\nARTIST’S STATEMENT\nJAIME E. STEVENS\nI have been weaving for over 35 years\, but only recently began weaving wall hangings. I began when the covid-19 lockdown occurred when I was looking for things to occupy all the newly-acquired free time. My husband suggested I try some wall hangings. \nOnce started\, I could hardly stop. My hangings are mostly in a technique called “saori\,” which is a Japanese Zen term meaning that everything has its own individual dignity. It is a free form style using the plainest weaving\, but augmented by other techniques such as inlay\, looping\, tatter weave\, clasped weft\, rya knots and the use of a wave stick which creates undulating patterns in the weft. The fibers I use range from wool\, cotton and silk to rayon and Tencel and a few synthetic ribbons. \nI have always been attracted to working with color and this was the reason I became a weaver in the first place. My inspirations come from many sources\, but most of these hangings are inspired by the colors of the natural world or from an intriguing bit of yarn. I use the landscape around me and also work from photographs. Lately I have started embellishing my work with vintage buttons which I have collected over the years. \nMy scarves\, ponchos and shawls are all of my own design and range from a lacy scarf to a warm woolen poncho with a hand-knitted collar. \nThe act of weaving also appeals to my tactile sense\, which is very soothing\, and it is very rhythmic when passing the shuttle back and forth. I quite often listen to music of all kinds from jazz to opera when I weave. \nSOME OF JAIME’S WORK: \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Maria Isabel Bonilla\nFeatured Artist\nDates: June/July 2022\n \n“My work is influenced by an intense sense of nostalgia for my homeland of Colombia. I find inspiration in elements like Prehispanic art\, Salsa music\, childhood memories and native flora and fauna. I consider my artwork “Tropical Surrealism with a hint of Salsa music” and favor a flashy\, psychedelic aesthetic that combines traditional mediums like acrylics and watercolors with more unexpected materials like glitter\, animal skulls\, antlers\, sequins and gemstones. I find joy in creating intricate\, lavish images where explosive color\, bold lines and seductive shimmer play an essential role in mesmerizing the viewer.  I strive to celebrate “The Colombian Spirit” through my art.” \n\nABOUT ISA

SUMMARY:Guest Artist - Burl Jones
DESCRIPTION:Burl Jones\nGuest Artist\nDates: April 1 – May 31\, 2022\n \nStunning bronze sculpture \nPlease Join us\nOpening Night\nFriday\, April 1st\n5 – 9 PM\nOn display through May\nWelcome to Sandstone\, Burl!\nWest Virginia\, in its rich traditions and culture\, nurtured an artistic sensibility in Burl Jones that would build into one of the country’s most respected careers in bronze sculpture. Born near Charleston\, Burl excelled in academics and athletics\, attending West Virginia University on a football scholarship\, and graduating Summa Cum Laude from m the School of Dentistry in 1966. \nA two-year stint in the United States Public Health Service brought him to the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana. This exposure to Native American culture\, western wildlife and frontier ethics would prove to be a major influence on his work. \nHis family shares his enthusiasm for nature\, wilderness\, and artistic creation. After 25 years of dentistry\, Burl shifted gears to focus entirely on his sculpture. Clay and wax are his mediums now\, and they provide a way of expressing his love for those interests that dominated his life. Wildlife\, mountain men\, Native Americans\, fishermen\, and hunters all come to have a life of their own under his skilled hands. \nOver 200 original sculptures have been produced in limited editions and sold to collectors world-wide. \n  \nGALLERY: \n\n

SUMMARY:SIGNS OF OUR TIMES – MANA LESMAN AND FOND MEMORIES – JAMES SEWARD\, JOINT SHOW (About James)
DESCRIPTION:About James Seward\nGuest Artist\nOPENING NIGHT AND RECEPTION DECEMBER 3\, 2021 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm\nShow Dates: Through December 2021\nby appointment January 2021 \nJAMES SEWARD – WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS \nWhen I was a little boy I used to look at pieces of material and try to envision what was hidden inside.   With a sculptor’s first and favorite tool\, a pocketknife\, I tried to release these things from their bonds\, with varying degrees of success.  Constantly experimenting with new materials\, given time and experience\, I brought these things to life.  After exhausting many pocket knives and home made tools\, and finally moving from Minnesota (a veritable wasteland for sculptors) I discovered many sources of help and inspiration.  I finally found a school that could teach the techniques of sculpture in Washington State where I lived and worked most of my adult life.  My medium of choice is the lost wax process for bronze sculpture.  I learned this process at the Powell Bronze Foundry in Kalispell\, Montana. \nOpening a bronze casting foundry in 1978 was the pivotal point from amateur enthusiasm to professional reality.  Building the foundry to 10 full time employees\, I cast bronze sculptures for artists from North Carolina to Anchorage\, Alaska for the next ten years.  I also cast my own sculpture.  I exhibited works in Washington\, Idaho\, Montana\, South Dakota\, Wyoming\, Oregon and California. \nI received the award of Second Place in the over-all Sculpture Category at the 1980 Belleview Art Fair.  I have also received miscellaneous other awards and ribbons at art exhibits through the years. I have chosen classic subject matter as my venue of expression and have largely concentrated on works of the female nude. \nI left Washington in 1995. With sojourns back in Minnesota and in Wyoming\, I moved to Billings\, Montana in 2003.  I now teach sculpture for the YMCA Poets on the Prairie Program and have begun learning to paint in watercolors and oils as well as doing sculpture.  My wife\, Mana and I are combining our talents in exhibiting our work together. \nI always look at my work with amazement and amusement.  I am amazed at what the small boy with the pocketknife has accomplished when I look at the sculpture on the stand.  And the arts never cease to thrill and captivate me.  I thoroughly delight in teaching young people the techniques and skills that I sought so fervently as a youth. \nOn display through December\nWelcome to Sandstone\, James! \nJames Seward\n18 Maier Ln.\nBillings\, Mt. 5910\n(406)-252-5780\nE-mail:  pintoramt@gmail.com \nHis work may be viewed on her website: mtsculptor1@gmail.com

SUMMARY:SIGNS OF OUR TIMES – MANA LESMAN AND FOND MEMORIES – JAMES SEWARD\, JOINT SHOW (About Mana)
DESCRIPTION:About Mana Lesman\nGuest Artist\nOPENING NIGHT AND RECEPTION DECEMBER 3\, 2021 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm\nShow Dates: Through December 2021\nby appointment January 2021 \nI PAINT WHAT I FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT.  THAT INCLUDES MANY THINGS: THE EARTH\, ITS LIFE FORMS\, MAN AND WOMAN\, HISTORY\, THE FUTURE\, THE PHILOSOPHIES THAT GOVERN OUR PERCEPTION OF ALL OF THESE.  I SEEK TO MAKE VISIBLE MY FEELINGS BECAUSE I THINK IT VITAL TO AWAKEN CONSCIOUSNESS\, MY OWN AND MY AUDIENCE.  THE VISUAL ARTS ARE A DIRECT CONDUIT INTO OUR DEEPEST SENSES OF FEELING AND AWARENESS.  LONG BEFORE WRITING THESE VISUALS AWAKENED IN US A SENSE OF OTHERS AND THE WORLDS AROUND US\, PAST\, PRESENT AND FUTURE.  EVEN NOW\, THESE AWARENESSES DETERMINE OUR COURSE OF ACTION AND HOPEFULLY AID US IN MAKING RATIONAL AND RELEVANT MOVES IN OUR LIVES.  MY ART IS DEDICATED TO THAT AWAKENING. \nMana Lesman began drawing and painting in the mountains of Montana where she grew up.  Having spent the early sixties studying art and architecture at Denver University\, Kansas State University and Kansas City Art Institute\, the artist traveled across the United States observing people and making sketches.  In 1964 she settled in Chicago where she worked the next seven years as a product designer.  During this time\, she turned her artistic skills toward recording the scenes and the people of Chicago.  To the people of the area she was known as ‘la Pintora’\, the ‘Lady Painter’ and was often found in schoolyards or side streets painting in watercolor or oil.  Ms. Lesman began exhibiting in 1976 and has since had over 100 one-woman shows in the U.S. and Canada.  Her work is currently in galleries in Hardin\, Red Lodge  and Helena\, and is accessible on the internet through the major search engines. \nIn 1978\, while Fine Arts Director for Elixir Gallery in Chicago\, she received a poster design award from the World Without War Committee\, Midwest.  She also received awards in 1981 and 1982 from the City of Chicago for work exhibited in the Palmer Square Festivals.  She received the Grand Champion Fine Arts award in 1990 as well as many First Place awards for her paintings at Montana Fair in Billings. \nMs. Lesman designed and directed the painting of two murals in Chicago\, “The People of Richmond Street United\,” in 1979\, funded by the Illinois Arts Council; and “Mujeres Latinas en Accion” (“Latin Women in Action”)\, 1982-83.  She served as juror for city and community sponsored art exhibits and instructed art and dance in Public Schools\, community centers and her own not-for-profit organization\, Lesman Studio\, Inc.  from 1979 through the present.  In 1980\, ’81 and ’82\, Ms Lesman received monies from the Chicago Council on Fine Arts to teach visual art workshops to young people and subsequently she served on a panel to select recipients of similar grants. \nIn 1985\, Ms. Lesman returned to her birthplace\, Billings\, Montana with her family.  She has continued painting and teaching.  She taught at Lockwood School\, Young Artists’ Studio\, Growth Thru Art\, City of Laurel\, West Park Village\, Billings Parks and Recreation and Rainbow House.  Currently she still instructs art at the Billings Community Center and through the YMCA Artist’s Voice program\, and the Summer Art Academy at Rocky Mountain College.   In 1988 she received a grant from the Montana Children’s Trust Fund to produce silkscreen posters.  She painted a horse in the “Horse of Course” program in 2002. \nMana and her husband\, painter and sculptor\, James Seward coordinated the fine arts component of the Senior Sports and Arts Festival for 10 years.  They also held administrative roles in the Billings Arts Association.  Currently their time is spent painting\, teaching and exhibiting their work.  Ms. Lesman is dedicated to seeing arts reach out to the community in every possible way.  Her direction has been to raise people consciousness\, to enhance their understanding of their roots\, their beliefs\, their labor and ultimately themselves through art. \nMana Lesman\n18 Maier Ln.\nBillings\, Mt. 5910\n(406)-252-5780\nE-mail:  pintoramt@gmail.com \nHer work may be viewed on her website:  manalesman.com
