SUMMARY:Guest Artist - Mana Lesman
DESCRIPTION:Mana Lesman\nGuest Artist\nOPENING NIGHT AND RECEPTION\, FRIDAY\, AUGUST 2\, 2024 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm\nShow Dates: Through September 2021 \nMana Lesman\, featured artist at Sandstone Gallery\, 2913 2nd Ave. N.\, Billings\, for the August 2nd Art Walk will be showing a collection of oil paintings ranging from decorative whimsy to serious statements about humanity.  Ms. Lesman paints with the belief that art is communication as well as decor and entertainment.  Her Graphic Surrealist oils speak to both those purposes.  Works will be on display  thru August and September. \n Graphic Surrealism\, a definition by artist and ‘ism creator\, Mana Lesman\nWritten October 14\, 2006 \nCombining abstract symbolism with recognizable images\, Mana Lesman has drawn much of her inspiration from original forms of our alphabet\, hieroglyphics and other symbols of ancient cultures.  She calls her work “graphic surrealism.”  Of particular interest are pieces featuring the periodic table of elements; the alphabet; myriad architectural elements:  especially those of decoration or “gingerbread” on buildings both ancient and modern; myths; early Celtic and northern European decorative designs including knot patterns and key patterns; jewelry\, carpet\, ceramics and fabric decoration.  It appears to me\, says Lesman\, that at some point in time\, all of these decorative images carried significant messages and were probably precursors to signs\, symbols and ultimately writing.  We have long since forgotten the specific messages they conveyed\, but such ‘decorations’ (such as the egg and dart borders on room interiors\, Ukrainian Easter egg decorations\, the paisley design on fabrics) still strike a deep chord in us and satisfy some deep need to find meaning and comfort in our universe. \nThe seeds of graphic surrealism came when I was experimenting with tempera\,” says the Billings native who returned to Montana in 1985.  “I was toying with abstract shapes I could twist and contort.” \nPart of Lesman’s inspiration was the graffiti art she saw in Chicago\, “But I just don’t paint on trains or school yards\,” she says.  “I also did not wish to copy the young graffiti artists of the mid ‘80s but chose to go in my own direction.” \nStarting with old symbols and pictograms\, seeing these as “ancient graffiti” the artist first dubbed her work\, “heiro-graffiti.” \n“It came together in bits and pieces\,” she says.  “I read National Geographic a lot while my father was ill\, and began reading about Middle Eastern cultures and archeology.  There are a lot of decorative motifs in architecture and jewelry\, many of which have meaning.  I think they speak to something elemental in us—some go back 30\,000 years to caves in Europe and Palestine. \nLesman does a lot of reading and study of ancient myth and history to inspire the development of images for her paintings.  From North American Native American symbols to East Indian Chakras\, no early society is without its “decorative” symbols and juxtaposed to each other\, they have lessons to teach us about the universal qualities of mankind\, about the ebb and flow of cultures\, and the specific interpretations of “that which is beautiful” which touches us all. \nNo two of Lesman’s paintings are the same\, and most are quite dissimilar.  Each is a message of beauty and\, according to Lesman\, “a question” of why the specific images were chosen and “what” the message was meant to convey. \nStatement by the Artist\, \nMana Lesman\n18 Maier Ln.\nBillings\, Mt. 5910\n(406)-252-5780\nE-mail:  pintoramt@gmail.com \nHer work may be viewed on her website:  manalesman.com

SUMMARY:Billings Arts Association - Jan Fujita
DESCRIPTION:Jan Fujita\nBillings Arts Association\nFEATURED ARTIST \nDates: June/July 2024 \nArtist’s Statement: My journey in creating visual art has been a long and winding one beginning in  Montana\, where I was born . I was fortunate to be taught by many of the who’s who of local art teachers and professors. \nI always loved to sketch\, paint and play with clay. After living in Japan   I realized I had an affinity for the bold colors and patterns of block prints by Hiroshige and\, the subtle sophisticated patterns of kimono and other fabric arts ubiquitous to Japan. This experience gave me multitudes of inspiration for my digitally created works and also\, polymer clay pieces. \nI hope you enjoy my offerings as much as I did creating them! \n  \n\nABOUT BIILLINGS ART ASSOCIATION

SUMMARY:Janice Polzen
DESCRIPTION:Janice Polzen\nFeatured Artist\nDates: June/July 2024 \n\n\n\n\nI am an artist from Detroit\, Michigan that has fallen in love with the mountains of Montana and have called this land home for almost a decade. This new series of work is titled Places and Things. In this group of oil paintings\, I am exploring the relationships we have with where we go and the stuff we use. The insights a particular place can hold\, the nostalgia that can linger\, and familiarity that can lead to objectification. The memories an object can hold\, the questions it can raise\, and the purpose it serves. I am creating a narrative within the juxtaposition of a particular object and a particular place. These images hold both personal sentiment and universal metaphor. \n\n\n\n\nSOME OF JANICE’S WORK

SUMMARY:Dixie Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Dixie Wilson\nWelcome New Artist\nDates: June/July 2024 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNature has always given me a sense of peace and tranquil-\nity and being raised in the country of Southeastern Montana gave me an appreciation of the outdoors and nature at an early age. I grew up around cowboys\, horses\, beautiful wide-open spaces and all of its living creatures. I suppose this sparked my interest in photographing the wild horses of the Pryor Moun- tains\, McCullough Peaks of Wyoming\, Onaqui horses of Utah and Salt River horses of Arizona. The cowboy way of life has sparked my interest since I was a small child as my dad was\na true cowboy and I was raised around cowboys & ranchers. \nPhotographing these subjects soon became my passion as I began to follow the light in pursuit of many other subjects such as wildlife\, flowers\, landscape and anything of beauty. A fleeting moment of a mood or feeling is what I strive to achieve with my camera so that I can share these moments with others through my camera lens. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSOME OF DIXIE’S WORK \n\n

SUMMARY:Jean Posusta
DESCRIPTION:Jean Posusta\nBillings Arts Association\nFEATURED ARTIST \nDates: April/May 2024 \nWelcome to Sandstone\, Jean! \n\n\n\nAbout Jean:\nShe can’t control her talent!  Baby Boomer Jean Posusta has talent niches which cross cultures; painting\, writing and directing and creating in a gamut of arts. \nBroad brushes and unusually shaped or divided and frameless canvases intimate her acrylic stylings.  Aspen groves and bayous draw you “back home”\, as you stare at her canvas. \nCapturing Montana’s serenity is her favorite ‘subject’.  Her personal joy in viewing God’s creations is seen in her work\, expressed through acrylics and ‘nature’s’ appendages affixed to her canvases.   In an early retirement\, Jean returned to the palette to create her current installation: \n“Montana\, Montana – It Bears Repeating” \nJean has previously displayed her talents in her home studio\, Billings & Red Lodge Art Walks\, decorating homes and shops\, and Midwest shows. \nJean Posusta\, as an author\, has written and directed numerous Murder Mysteries for Performance\, song lyrics and poetry; and several books\, Hope We Don’t Go to Paulette’s Again Soon and Twisted Winds of Verango\, I See You with My Heart\, and Is Anybody Else Like Me?  Adding quotes to outdoor photos mounted on natural slate is another art form used; called ‘Poetography’.   Floral Design is one more endeavor where she expresses her artistic flairs.  Over 100 of her holiday arrangement show pieces have been judged at the Yellowstone Art Museum\, displayed in Show of Homes\, and TimeSquare Furniture. \nAs a journalist\, she was a key contributor for “Rocky Mountain 3”\, and dedicated a book to Hospice about recovering from the death experience for families\, It Just Doesn’t Make any Sense.   In God and nature\, Jean finds her catalysts. \nWhile docenting children at the Yellowstone Art Museum\, Jean became intrigued by regional artists Carol Hagan\, Carol Spielman\, and Harry Koyama.   Jean dabbled as an art agent for a couple of friends and found she was reinspired while visiting galleries and got back to painting 10 years ago.  Her art work is currently found in eight galleries around Montana. \nSOME OF JEAN’S WORK: \nAwaiting SpringCrabby SkyJust Minutes AgoThe Three Bear\n  \nABOUT BIILLINGS ART ASSOCIATION

SUMMARY:Peter Herzog
DESCRIPTION:Peter Herzog\nFeatured Artist\nDates: April/May 2024 \nPeter Herzog was born in Coburg Germany in 1943. In 1952\, he moved to the United States\, when his mother married a US soldier\, making him an Army brat that moved around to different places such as Virginia\, Louisiana\, Texas and eventually to Ohio where he graduated from John Adams High School in Cleveland. He then decided to follow in the footsteps of his Stepfather and joined the Army in 1964\, in 1968 he served with the 10th Cavalry in Vietnam. \nAfter returning home to the United States in December 1968\, changed forever\, in 1969\, he visited a friend whom he had served with in Germany\, here in Montana and moved here a month later. \nHe attended Eastern Montana College (now MSU-B) and during this time met his wife\, Carole\, and they settled down for the next 30 years. In the summer of 1999\, Pete took a job in Seattle\, WA as the Controller of a Mechanical Insulation Company until he retired in February of 2011\, when he moved to Maricopa\, Arizona. Three years later\, Pete and Carole moved back to Billings\, Montana. They have been married 50+ years. They have two amazing children and 3 grand kids\, all boys. \nAsking Pete what draws him to photography he said “About 18 years ago I received a black and white portrait for Christmas\, and it was of my younger nephew and that is what got me started in photography. At that instant\, I formed a connection with that image and decided that I wanted to be a photographer and shoot images that will allow me to freeze those moments and feelings in time.” He went on to say\, “Photography is all about the subject\, composition and light. In addition to that\, I want my images to convey emotion. The world we live in is not a perfect place and some of my images will show that very thing. I try and tell it like it is through my photography. I want to bring out the beauty that we find in nature. The feeling in your soul when looking at a majestic landscape as our heart slowly beats when experiencing the Southwest’s amazing colorful Sunsets\, when the blue-green ocean waves crash into the rocky shores we feel alive\, and the simplicity of puppies\, kittens and babies. A lot of us look at the world around us through rose-colored glasses and only see what we want to see. Hopefully through my images people can see and feel the world the way it really is.” \nSuffering from PTSD\, photography is my therapy. I can go out to take pictures in the morning and the next thing I know it is afternoon. Time just seems to fly\, I love it. \nOne final word from the photographer: “Talk is cheap\, it cost money to buy Whiskey.” \nSOME OF PETER’S WORK \n\n  \n\nABOUT PETER

SUMMARY:Donna Moore
DESCRIPTION:Donna Moore\nFeatured Artist\nDates: April/May 2024 \nBorn and raised in central Montana\, Donna graduated from Whitworth College with a science degree. From there\, she went to Seattle where she worked as a medical technologist at Virginia Mason Medical Center for many years. Although her academic background was in the natural sciences\, she had never completely abandoned her childhood dream of becoming an artist. Over the years she has catered to this dream whenever the opportunity availed itself\, including elective credits in art while in college\, sculpture classes at Seattle Community College and various drawing and painting workshops. \nThe last several years have been devoted to developing her own style\, the direction that is influenced by her love for animals both wild and domestic. She wishes to capture the spirit and personality unique to each animal. Recently she has been exploring the use of a limited palette thus creating a harmony she finds pleasing. \nDonna believes art completes ones soul whether an active participant or one who appreciates art\, be it music\, theater and/or the visual arts. She also believes a society that does not embrace the arts will falter and die. \nSOME OF DONNA’S WORK \nimage2IMG_1897image0IMG_2024-03-18-175303IMG_2024-03-18-174959Donna Moore - I Feel LostMoore-Donna-WearyMoore-Donna-Blue dancerDonna Moore - In AweDonna Moore - Lady in CoralC98427E7-48CA-4BF4-92EE-63B79A0EC1EB31928698-606C-479A-8F07-A5992308016953624E8F-55AE-4BC4-AB40-738E31301E1A\n  \n\nABOUT DONNA

SUMMARY:ArtWalk Billings-February 2024
DESCRIPTION:FREE! \nCELEBRATING WILL CRAIN \nStop in and say farewell to William Crain as he embarks on a new journey and to celebrate 17 years as a valued member of our Co-Op gallery. \nFEATURED ARTIST\n \nPlease join us in welcoming our newest partner member and featured artist John Roberts.  John is showing new work from the past three years which includes the beautiful landscapes and nature of Montana. \n\nI relish the infinite possibility of that first mark on a canvas. I enjoy the chaos of the middle painting when I wonder if I should throw the whole thing in the trash. I savor the coalescing surprise of the final touches and the moment I can say\, “It’s done.” For me the journey is as important as the destination and the process is as important as the final result. In that I find peace. –John Roberts \n\n  \nGUEST ARTIST \nOur guest artist for February and March is Susan Nelson\, a long-time resident of Montana\, and retired educator.  She has been seriously painting since 1995.  As a watercolor painter\, she has concentrated on painting the landscapes and sites of eastern Montana.  She has also done many paintings of abandoned homesteads extant throughout the southeastern part of the state.  She has recently began painting with oils and we are excited to see where this medium takes her.  \nBILLINGS ARTS ASSOCIATION \nWe have two wonderful artists representing Billings Arts Association. Edda Freestone and Ev Bergeron. \nMEMBER ARTISTS \nWe’ve been busy improving our gallery\, and everything is fabulously re-set\, so there will be lots of new things to see.
