SUMMARY:Sandstone Gallery Completes “Symbols of Montana” Mural on Downtown Billings’ LightBike Trail
DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE \nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nSeptember 12\, 2023 \nContact:\nSandstone Gallery: (406) 256-5837\nWeb: https://sandstonegallerymt.com \nSandstone Gallery Completes “Symbols of Montana” Mural on Downtown Billings’ LightBike Trail \n(September 12\, 2023 – Billings\, MT) – A new mural titled “Symbols of Montana” has just been completed in the alleyway between Sandstone Gallery and the Yarn Bar in downtown Billings. As part of the #LightBike Trail sponsored by Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA)\, Sandstone Gallery was awarded a grant to install a fifty-foot wide by twelve-foot-high mural depicting traditional and well-known symbols of Montana. \nThe first step was to get the building owner’s approval. Once approval was attained\, the fun began with the design consisting of several symbols of Montana including the state animal – grizzly bear; the state bird – meadowlark; the state flower – bitterroot; and other symbols many people recognize as truly “Montana” – moose\, paintbrush flowers\, and big sky. The grizzly was designed after Lynn Shield’s “Purple Bear” painting\, and the moose was designed after Co-Director Teresa Brown’s “Mr. Moose” painting. The meadowlark and flowers are a combination of styles by other gallery artists. The next step was submitting the proposal to DBA and waiting. \nOnce we were given the green light\, the fun began with Sandstone’s member artists Dick Cottrill\, Madelein Bladow\, Teresa Brown\, and Ken Denning power washing the wall\, which likely had 20 years of dust and who knows what on it\, making sure to keep the integrity of the old bricks.  Next came color selection from the amazing colors by Sherwin Williams.  Dick\, Ken\, Lynn\, Teresa\, and Madelein spray painted the base coat of blue and yellow. Then\, on a dark night in late August\, Lynn and Teresa projected the design onto the wall and sketched the outlines of the Moose\, Bear and Meadowlark. A few days later\, Lynn set up early morning before dawn to sketch all the flowers and grass along the bottom of the mural. \nNext\, a schedule for painting was set\, and the artists of Sandstone Gallery showed up with paintbrushes in hand. Lynn painted her bear and Teresa painted her moose\, while Dick Cottrill painted the meadowlark. Lana Bittner\, Madelein Bladow\, Mary Hopper\, Donna Moore\, William Crain\, Jennifer Crain Baretta\, Ken Denning\, Christine Denning\, all lent their artistic skills to the body of the mural.  Some of Sandstone’s member partners were unavailable for various reasons\, but they there in spirit: Victoria Wetsch\, John Kennedy\, Ken Dvorak\, Nancy Morrison and Leo Olson Estate.  Greg Brown selflessly volunteered to transport\, set up and tear down scaffolding each day\, for which the artists are very thankful. All told\, over 160 man-hours were spent painting this vibrant mural. \nWhen asked her favorite part of the project\, Lynn said\, “I absolutely loved painting the bear. It is the largest canvas I’ve ever worked on\, and it was a wonderful challenge. But I think what I loved most about this project was the teamwork of our members. I’ve only been with Sandstone for a few years\, and this is the first true team project we worked on. I really loved the energy everyone had toward creating something lasting and beautiful. I believe we reached our goal of representing Montana and the diverse styles of our artists.” \nTeresa struggled with heights but was able to muster up enough determination to brave scaffolding for two full days of painting.  When it was complete\, she let out a little cheer and said\, “I loved seeing our vision come to life\, and conquering my fears”.  When asked about her favorite part\, she said “It so awesome to showcase the many talents of our gallery artists on a lasting piece of art to be enjoyed by the entire community.” \nSandstone Gallery’s co-director Jennifer Baretta was also on hand to comment. She said “Thank you to Downtown Billings. We love our mural\, and we are proud to be part of the Light Bike Trail! We have wanted to do something like this for many years\, and this grant opportunity helped make our dreams a reality.” \nThe #LightBike Trail is an art installation that winds through the alleyways of downtown billings and is sponsored by Downtown Billings Alliance. 116 N 29th St suite a\, Billings\, MT 59101.  There will be a map of the installations\, each containing a lighted bicycle\, high on the wall\, along with an original mural. The idea was to brighten the areas to make them safer and more beautiful\, and to make an enjoyable family walk through downtown. For more information about DBA and the Light Bike Trail\, go to https://downtownbillings.com/. \nSandstone Gallery\, located at 2913 2nd Avenue North in downtown Billings is a “Made in Montana” designated co-op gallery of sixteen local artists in the Billings\, Montana area with paintings\, sculpture\, jewelry\, ceramics\, glass\, photography\, cards & gifts. Open hours are Tuesday – Friday 11am – 4pm\, Saturday 10m – 2pm. The gallery is closed Sundays\, Mondays and holidays. SUMMARY:Dione Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Please welcome our guest artist for October\, stained glass Artist\, Dione Roberts of D & J Glass. \nDione Roberts\nArtist’s Biography\nDione Roberts was born in Billings\, Montana and has lived there all her life.  Growing up in a house filled with kilns allowed her to experiment with melting glass\, stretching bottles and making jewelry and glass tiles at an early age.  She began designing and fabricating stained glass in 1980 and continues to make originally designed fused glass\, stained glass and mosaics. \nMuch of her fused and painted glass work reflects her Montana roots.  The Montana landscape\, wheat\, and crows as well as fantastical fish are often her subject matter.  Adding texture through the use of ground glass in the forms of frit\, powders and strings of glass are an important part of her work and she creates many elements using torches and heat.  Pieces are fired multiple times at temperatures reaching 1500 degrees.  She also works in a reverse fired enamel technique where designs and patterns are painted on the back of the glass\, a technique that takes up to 8 twelve-hour firings.   \nIn her studio\, she works with clients to make originally designed pieces of glass art for their homes.   \nHer work can be seen at The Frame Hut in Billings\, Montana.+ \n

SUMMARY:Billings Art Association - Carolyn Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:Carolyn Kennedy\nBillings Arts Association\nFEATURED ARTIST \nDates: April 1 – May 27 \n“I was born and raised in the shadows of the mountains of southwestern Montana. As a young woman\, I decided to learn oil painting. Life took me to Fresno\, California\, and art took me from oils to watercolor. I later moved to Los Angeles and acrylics. After some experimentation\, I discovered a way to layer clear and pigmented acrylics and mixed media. I use this technique to paint my emotional response to the external environment and to my internal life. Several years ago\, I returned to Montana and am again finding inspiration in the beauty of my native state.” \n–Carolyn Kennedy \nWelcome to Sandstone\, Carolyn! \n\nABOUT BIILLINGS ARTS ASSOCIATION  \n\n\nPORTFOLIO:

SUMMARY:Featured Artist: Victoria Wetsch
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Wetsch\nFeatured Artist\nDates: March/April\, 2023 \nCurrently I am working from my Montana studio in Billings using a variety of techniques and mediums such as oil-based paints\, oil pencil and encaustics. I also work with water-based inks\, watercolor and graphite. In particular\, encaustic is one of my favorite mediums. I like to achieve the character of hot wax painting by suspending textures\, images and pigments through many layers of fused medium. Encaustic medium requires a specific proportion of purified beeswax mixed with natural fossilized resin\, blended with oil-based pigments. My original encaustic works have a unique\, lustrous and sculptural appeal. The painting cures and hardens into an ever-enduring work of art while the pollen in the wax produces a final golden luster\, leaving a natural fragrance of beeswax. Throughout time\, encaustic paintings have proven their longevity and exceptional archival properties when cared for as with all fine art forms. \n\n\nAbout Victoria:\nhttps://sandstonegallerymt.com/victoria-wetsch/\n\n\n\nSome of Victoria’s Work:\n6545A43F-3C0D-41F5-96EC-1D7D5A6DB4F98F23F96D-966C-4678-BF9F-1961E1EB3BD3224CD43D-BD18-4614-8DD4-AF8BE3E14664072B612C-C278-4608-8312-68816F621B9C8DDCF921-548B-4953-A6C2-D619BA07AFB5C6C9764B-C2A5-4B0E-B243-BA42E33A443B7A10A62B-2AF2-4E49-99CF-101451C63284124F914D-6CC4-4C73-A23F-84AF0BEB7BAECC05FC74-D5AE-461E-93C1-985BE2E7071D550020C6-D238-4C3E-B5C8-FC3C2B3F9FA8A3990D13-123D-42F5-8588-8ED174404CD51A868F34-0BAC-4F2F-9486-4532C1F348EE54A1A359-7351-4062-9F79-3F6EA71BD7EBE5A7F9E3-A03C-4ADE-A478-F93D22D263027E297022-E03B-47B1-B738-78E84BEDD9A6456A92B9-9156-4968-96A1-BE62B25604CADC67A858-26DA-4983-A12B-87D13BCCFF0335D8F6D3-C910-4E4E-AFE1-1A4EE856F25A3C39496F-164B-4C76-983A-4CFA54A3B179BE6237EA-9504-4675-85B4-633939EF96A65ACC7EA8-5805-4CCD-8F23-9AF5082B0F56F11FB20C-3C80-40C6-A4C3-791C579B3CF3136CA0ED-AFC1-4035-B052-6BE7FA518F2329CA2639-63FB-47B4-A3DF-C603BBC37C0EB2BF14AD-D8F7-424F-AC1A-E1F53C38ED706E8A6E99-FA89-4000-98DB-92243A43AB9C8B87D56A-81F9-4B60-A500-32DAA5CA4CAF3A9B8EB6-AED0-41F1-BF91-350498BA897A3181ABA2-E6D4-4949-8A0C-5F440BEFF2320BDAE236-30C0-471E-B8B3-7B53FEDFBCC8DC35300E-20D2-4135-AD36-5BFDF4E7C4486F4FC981-EEE3-4B03-99D3-705CAB775479BA4731B6-EFF9-4DE9-94E2-735FA822B82FB23C6217-6F04-40BB-91F7-AEAB926303D3D58E4CF9-F67B-4F64-A4EF-700B891FA33C4D96CDF3-3DC5-419A-AFC8-BDBEB40C0C2C7AFFCC36-EE53-48D7-9953-7E439D9C2274BB055A0B-C893-499C-8965-10161B9A42727838D7A4-5A10-4C6E-99A9-C2CED5364389B8007583-E99D-4D75-888E-6B87259FF8A7

SUMMARY:Featured Artist: Ken Dvorak
DESCRIPTION:Ken Dvorak\nFeatured Artist\nDates: March/April\, 2023 \nHi\, I’m Ken Dvorak\, a retired teacher\, who decided to become a Fine Art Nature Photographer.  We recently moved back to Montana from Washington state.  We lived in the rain shadow of the Olympic National Park.  It was an area where I had wanted to take photos for a long time.  Now I’m exploring Montana for images to add to my portfolio. \n\n\nMy photography career started back in the late 60’s when I was in the Navy.  I worked in an office onboard a ship in Newport\, RI.  In our office was the ship’s photo lab and I became friends with the ship’s photographer.  I bought a used 35mm Pentax and started shooting black and white images around Newport.  I was able to use the ship’s lab after the work day and learned how to develop black and white film and print my images.  Later I set up my digital darkroom at our house.  My current darkroom is in our basement. \n\n\nI like the idea of having control over my images from the click of the shutter to seeing the final print come out of the printer.  I also mat and frame my own images for display and sale. \n\n\nI was accepted in June of 2022 to join the Sandstone Gallery. \n\n\nHope you enjoy.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKen Dvorak Fine Art Photography

SUMMARY:Michael Koski - Guest Artist
DESCRIPTION:Glimpse of Montana Watercolors – Michael Koski\nAs a Red Lodge\, Montana\, native\, Michael’s relationship with the mountains of Montana developed early in his life.  Fishing trips in the Beartooth Mountains with his grandfather reinforced his appreciation of nature’s beauty\, as well as fostered a curiosity of geology.  Michael went on to earn a degree in geology from the University of Montana\, always mixing art classes in with his science curriculum.  He considers himself lucky to have taken classes from Ben Steele at Eastern Montana College and Dr. Dew at the University of Montana.  As his geology career marched on\, Michael continued taking workshops with many fine local and regional artists whose influence is seen in his art.  After 39 years in geology\, it was time to work on his second passion and focus on watercolor. \nArtist Statement\n“Watercolor’s magic helps me capture life’s inspirations.  I continue to grow as an artist\, enhancing my skills\, occasionally successfully merging magic\, subject\, and mood to produce a timeless piece.” \nContact Information:\nMichael Koski\nBusiness name:  A glimpse of Montana Watercolor\nAddress:  Box 706 Columbus Montana 59019\nPhone: (406) 780-0363\nEmail: mkoskigeo@gmail.com\nWeb site:  glimpseofmt.com \nPortfolio
