SUMMARY:Jean Posusta
DESCRIPTION:Jean Posusta\nBillings Arts Association\nFEATURED ARTIST \nDates: April/May 2024 \nWelcome to Sandstone\, Jean! \n\n\n\nAbout Jean:\nShe can’t control her talent!  Baby Boomer Jean Posusta has talent niches which cross cultures; painting\, writing and directing and creating in a gamut of arts. \nBroad brushes and unusually shaped or divided and frameless canvases intimate her acrylic stylings.  Aspen groves and bayous draw you “back home”\, as you stare at her canvas. \nCapturing Montana’s serenity is her favorite ‘subject’.  Her personal joy in viewing God’s creations is seen in her work\, expressed through acrylics and ‘nature’s’ appendages affixed to her canvases.   In an early retirement\, Jean returned to the palette to create her current installation: \n“Montana\, Montana – It Bears Repeating” \nJean has previously displayed her talents in her home studio\, Billings & Red Lodge Art Walks\, decorating homes and shops\, and Midwest shows. \nJean Posusta\, as an author\, has written and directed numerous Murder Mysteries for Performance\, song lyrics and poetry; and several books\, Hope We Don’t Go to Paulette’s Again Soon and Twisted Winds of Verango\, I See You with My Heart\, and Is Anybody Else Like Me?  Adding quotes to outdoor photos mounted on natural slate is another art form used; called ‘Poetography’.   Floral Design is one more endeavor where she expresses her artistic flairs.  Over 100 of her holiday arrangement show pieces have been judged at the Yellowstone Art Museum\, displayed in Show of Homes\, and TimeSquare Furniture. \nAs a journalist\, she was a key contributor for “Rocky Mountain 3”\, and dedicated a book to Hospice about recovering from the death experience for families\, It Just Doesn’t Make any Sense.   In God and nature\, Jean finds her catalysts. \nWhile docenting children at the Yellowstone Art Museum\, Jean became intrigued by regional artists Carol Hagan\, Carol Spielman\, and Harry Koyama.   Jean dabbled as an art agent for a couple of friends and found she was reinspired while visiting galleries and got back to painting 10 years ago.  Her art work is currently found in eight galleries around Montana. \nSOME OF JEAN’S WORK: \nAwaiting SpringCrabby SkyJust Minutes AgoThe Three Bear\n  \nABOUT BIILLINGS ART ASSOCIATION

SUMMARY:Peter Herzog
DESCRIPTION:Peter Herzog\nFeatured Artist\nDates: April/May 2024 \nPeter Herzog was born in Coburg Germany in 1943. In 1952\, he moved to the United States\, when his mother married a US soldier\, making him an Army brat that moved around to different places such as Virginia\, Louisiana\, Texas and eventually to Ohio where he graduated from John Adams High School in Cleveland. He then decided to follow in the footsteps of his Stepfather and joined the Army in 1964\, in 1968 he served with the 10th Cavalry in Vietnam. \nAfter returning home to the United States in December 1968\, changed forever\, in 1969\, he visited a friend whom he had served with in Germany\, here in Montana and moved here a month later. \nHe attended Eastern Montana College (now MSU-B) and during this time met his wife\, Carole\, and they settled down for the next 30 years. In the summer of 1999\, Pete took a job in Seattle\, WA as the Controller of a Mechanical Insulation Company until he retired in February of 2011\, when he moved to Maricopa\, Arizona. Three years later\, Pete and Carole moved back to Billings\, Montana. They have been married 50+ years. They have two amazing children and 3 grand kids\, all boys. \nAsking Pete what draws him to photography he said “About 18 years ago I received a black and white portrait for Christmas\, and it was of my younger nephew and that is what got me started in photography. At that instant\, I formed a connection with that image and decided that I wanted to be a photographer and shoot images that will allow me to freeze those moments and feelings in time.” He went on to say\, “Photography is all about the subject\, composition and light. In addition to that\, I want my images to convey emotion. The world we live in is not a perfect place and some of my images will show that very thing. I try and tell it like it is through my photography. I want to bring out the beauty that we find in nature. The feeling in your soul when looking at a majestic landscape as our heart slowly beats when experiencing the Southwest’s amazing colorful Sunsets\, when the blue-green ocean waves crash into the rocky shores we feel alive\, and the simplicity of puppies\, kittens and babies. A lot of us look at the world around us through rose-colored glasses and only see what we want to see. Hopefully through my images people can see and feel the world the way it really is.” \nSuffering from PTSD\, photography is my therapy. I can go out to take pictures in the morning and the next thing I know it is afternoon. Time just seems to fly\, I love it. \nOne final word from the photographer: “Talk is cheap\, it cost money to buy Whiskey.” \nSOME OF PETER’S WORK \n\n  \n\nABOUT PETER

SUMMARY:Donna Moore
DESCRIPTION:Donna Moore\nFeatured Artist\nDates: April/May 2024 \nBorn and raised in central Montana\, Donna graduated from Whitworth College with a science degree. From there\, she went to Seattle where she worked as a medical technologist at Virginia Mason Medical Center for many years. Although her academic background was in the natural sciences\, she had never completely abandoned her childhood dream of becoming an artist. Over the years she has catered to this dream whenever the opportunity availed itself\, including elective credits in art while in college\, sculpture classes at Seattle Community College and various drawing and painting workshops. \nThe last several years have been devoted to developing her own style\, the direction that is influenced by her love for animals both wild and domestic. She wishes to capture the spirit and personality unique to each animal. Recently she has been exploring the use of a limited palette thus creating a harmony she finds pleasing. \nDonna believes art completes ones soul whether an active participant or one who appreciates art\, be it music\, theater and/or the visual arts. She also believes a society that does not embrace the arts will falter and die. \nSOME OF DONNA’S WORK \nimage2IMG_1897image0IMG_2024-03-18-175303IMG_2024-03-18-174959Donna Moore - I Feel LostMoore-Donna-WearyMoore-Donna-Blue dancerDonna Moore - In AweDonna Moore - Lady in CoralC98427E7-48CA-4BF4-92EE-63B79A0EC1EB31928698-606C-479A-8F07-A5992308016953624E8F-55AE-4BC4-AB40-738E31301E1A\n  \n\nABOUT DONNA

SUMMARY:ArtWalk Billings-February 2024
DESCRIPTION:FREE! \nCELEBRATING WILL CRAIN \nStop in and say farewell to William Crain as he embarks on a new journey and to celebrate 17 years as a valued member of our Co-Op gallery. \nFEATURED ARTIST\n \nPlease join us in welcoming our newest partner member and featured artist John Roberts.  John is showing new work from the past three years which includes the beautiful landscapes and nature of Montana. \n\nI relish the infinite possibility of that first mark on a canvas. I enjoy the chaos of the middle painting when I wonder if I should throw the whole thing in the trash. I savor the coalescing surprise of the final touches and the moment I can say\, “It’s done.” For me the journey is as important as the destination and the process is as important as the final result. In that I find peace. –John Roberts \n\n  \nGUEST ARTIST \nOur guest artist for February and March is Susan Nelson\, a long-time resident of Montana\, and retired educator.  She has been seriously painting since 1995.  As a watercolor painter\, she has concentrated on painting the landscapes and sites of eastern Montana.  She has also done many paintings of abandoned homesteads extant throughout the southeastern part of the state.  She has recently began painting with oils and we are excited to see where this medium takes her.  \nBILLINGS ARTS ASSOCIATION \nWe have two wonderful artists representing Billings Arts Association. Edda Freestone and Ev Bergeron. \nMEMBER ARTISTS \nWe’ve been busy improving our gallery\, and everything is fabulously re-set\, so there will be lots of new things to see. SUMMARY:Susan Leaverton - Guest Artist
DESCRIPTION:Weaving is very contemplative. The process focuses one’s thoughts\, through repetitive manual motions. I use only quality fibers\, primarily natural wool\, cotton\, silk\, and linen. I like to consider my work straight-forward and honest. Nothing is computer generated. Sometimes the results are successful; sometimes the piece just does not work. But each time a weaving is cut from the loom it is a moment of truth. Finishing techniques can also make\, or break\, the end result. \nEach warp is woven with the hope that what emerges will bring happiness to the person who acquires the finished item. The process is a basic reminder of how all of our lives are woven together on earth. \n–Susan Leaverton \nA vision and a passion!\nMy love of weaving began a long time ago during college days at Syracuse University. As a Fabric Design major\, weaving quickly became a consuming focus. I continue to be intrigued by the effects of color and texture as fibers interact with each other. \nIndividual yarns come together on my looms as they form unique fabrics intended for both functional and decorative use. The beauty of the Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains and all of Montana’s glorious vistas remain a constant source of inspiration in my life and my textile work. \nI use 4 harness hand operated looms to create fabrics\, combining primarily natural fibers such as wool\, cotton\, silk and linen. Accents of tencel\, bamboo\,  metallic and other novelty threads offer variety. \nProduct lines include traditional scarves\, table runners\, shawls and wall hangings. A signature item for 53 years has been my ubiquitous wool Lambscapes© which have found their way around the world as ambassadors of Montana. These original designs never fail to bring smiles and serve as reminders of peace\, love and hope. Nothing wrong with that! Of course a few Llamascapes© and Alpacascapes© join in the fun. \nBrief general bio info:\nBorn in Baltimore MD 1948\nRec’d Bachelor of Arts (Fabric Design) from Syracuse University\, NY\nRec’d Master of Arts (Art History\, Medieval Art) from Penn State\, State College PA\nThesis on the Great East Window of York Minster\, England\nLived in MD until 2006 when Susan moved with her husband\, Robert\, to MT.\nThey were brought to Montana because of Robert’s first call as an ELCA Lutheran Pastor in Absarokee. \nAfter many years selling artist supplies\, traveling\, and working in Customer Service at FedEx in MD\, she has enjoyed a wide variety of employment in MT: church admin assistant\, Lutheran Lay Pastor\, census taker\, school lunch line lady\, youth mentor\, mail carrier\, retail sales\, teacher of French & American Sign Language to elementary age children and more…. \nInterests:\nFiber projects\, specifically weaving\, knitting and sewing\n38 years participating in the MD Sheep + Wool Festival\, & vendor committee chair\nIndependent international travel (Europe\, China\, Bolivia etc)\nHorse riding\, hiking\, reading\, sketching \nSome of Susan’s work:

SUMMARY:Sandstone Gallery Completes “Symbols of Montana” Mural on Downtown Billings’ LightBike Trail
DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE \nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nSeptember 12\, 2023 \nContact:\nSandstone Gallery: (406) 256-5837\nWeb: https://sandstonegallerymt.com \nSandstone Gallery Completes “Symbols of Montana” Mural on Downtown Billings’ LightBike Trail \n(September 12\, 2023 – Billings\, MT) – A new mural titled “Symbols of Montana” has just been completed in the alleyway between Sandstone Gallery and the Yarn Bar in downtown Billings. As part of the #LightBike Trail sponsored by Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA)\, Sandstone Gallery was awarded a grant to install a fifty-foot wide by twelve-foot-high mural depicting traditional and well-known symbols of Montana. \nThe first step was to get the building owner’s approval. Once approval was attained\, the fun began with the design consisting of several symbols of Montana including the state animal – grizzly bear; the state bird – meadowlark; the state flower – bitterroot; and other symbols many people recognize as truly “Montana” – moose\, paintbrush flowers\, and big sky. The grizzly was designed after Lynn Shield’s “Purple Bear” painting\, and the moose was designed after Co-Director Teresa Brown’s “Mr. Moose” painting. The meadowlark and flowers are a combination of styles by other gallery artists. The next step was submitting the proposal to DBA and waiting. \nOnce we were given the green light\, the fun began with Sandstone’s member artists Dick Cottrill\, Madelein Bladow\, Teresa Brown\, and Ken Denning power washing the wall\, which likely had 20 years of dust and who knows what on it\, making sure to keep the integrity of the old bricks.  Next came color selection from the amazing colors by Sherwin Williams.  Dick\, Ken\, Lynn\, Teresa\, and Madelein spray painted the base coat of blue and yellow. Then\, on a dark night in late August\, Lynn and Teresa projected the design onto the wall and sketched the outlines of the Moose\, Bear and Meadowlark. A few days later\, Lynn set up early morning before dawn to sketch all the flowers and grass along the bottom of the mural. \nNext\, a schedule for painting was set\, and the artists of Sandstone Gallery showed up with paintbrushes in hand. Lynn painted her bear and Teresa painted her moose\, while Dick Cottrill painted the meadowlark. Lana Bittner\, Madelein Bladow\, Mary Hopper\, Donna Moore\, William Crain\, Jennifer Crain Baretta\, Ken Denning\, Christine Denning\, all lent their artistic skills to the body of the mural.  Some of Sandstone’s member partners were unavailable for various reasons\, but they there in spirit: Victoria Wetsch\, John Kennedy\, Ken Dvorak\, Nancy Morrison and Leo Olson Estate.  Greg Brown selflessly volunteered to transport\, set up and tear down scaffolding each day\, for which the artists are very thankful. All told\, over 160 man-hours were spent painting this vibrant mural. \nWhen asked her favorite part of the project\, Lynn said\, “I absolutely loved painting the bear. It is the largest canvas I’ve ever worked on\, and it was a wonderful challenge. But I think what I loved most about this project was the teamwork of our members. I’ve only been with Sandstone for a few years\, and this is the first true team project we worked on. I really loved the energy everyone had toward creating something lasting and beautiful. I believe we reached our goal of representing Montana and the diverse styles of our artists.” \nTeresa struggled with heights but was able to muster up enough determination to brave scaffolding for two full days of painting.  When it was complete\, she let out a little cheer and said\, “I loved seeing our vision come to life\, and conquering my fears”.  When asked about her favorite part\, she said “It so awesome to showcase the many talents of our gallery artists on a lasting piece of art to be enjoyed by the entire community.” \nSandstone Gallery’s co-director Jennifer Baretta was also on hand to comment. She said “Thank you to Downtown Billings. We love our mural\, and we are proud to be part of the Light Bike Trail! We have wanted to do something like this for many years\, and this grant opportunity helped make our dreams a reality.” \nThe #LightBike Trail is an art installation that winds through the alleyways of downtown billings and is sponsored by Downtown Billings Alliance. 116 N 29th St suite a\, Billings\, MT 59101.  There will be a map of the installations\, each containing a lighted bicycle\, high on the wall\, along with an original mural. The idea was to brighten the areas to make them safer and more beautiful\, and to make an enjoyable family walk through downtown. DESCRIPTION:Please welcome our guest artist for October\, stained glass Artist\, Dione Roberts of D & J Glass. \nDione Roberts\nArtist’s Biography\nDione Roberts was born in Billings\, Montana and has lived there all her life.  Growing up in a house filled with kilns allowed her to experiment with melting glass\, stretching bottles and making jewelry and glass tiles at an early age.  She began designing and fabricating stained glass in 1980 and continues to make originally designed fused glass\, stained glass and mosaics. \nMuch of her fused and painted glass work reflects her Montana roots.  The Montana landscape\, wheat\, and crows as well as fantastical fish are often her subject matter.  Adding texture through the use of ground glass in the forms of frit\, powders and strings of glass are an important part of her work and she creates many elements using torches and heat.  Pieces are fired multiple times at temperatures reaching 1500 degrees.  She also works in a reverse fired enamel technique where designs and patterns are painted on the back of the glass\, a technique that takes up to 8 twelve-hour firings.   \nIn her studio\, she works with clients to make originally designed pieces of glass art for their homes.   \nHer work can be seen at The Frame Hut in Billings\, Montana.+ \n
